Understanding property-based subsidized housing
On this page, subsidized housing means published assistance attached to a property or designated apartments. It can include project-based rental assistance and other property assistance arrangements. The program may cover only some homes within a larger community, so confirm the apartment and program you are applying for.
Eligibility, rent calculations and waiting lists differ by program. Income-based assistance can reduce a qualifying household’s payment, but the subsidized label alone does not establish your rent. It also does not confirm acceptance of a tenant-based voucher you already hold. Read each listing’s program scope, then ask the property or administering agency how to apply.

Subsidized housing questions
General program guidance reviewed October 15, 2026. Check the applicable property and program requirements before applying.
Who qualifies for a subsidized apartment?
Requirements depend on the program and apartment. Household income and size may matter, and some homes serve seniors or other eligible groups. Ask which program applies and request its current eligibility requirements; there is no single qualification rule for every listing.
Will my rent be based on my income?
Some rental assistance programs calculate a household contribution using income. Other affordability arrangements use restricted rents. Ask for the calculation that applies to the apartment, including utilities, rather than assuming every subsidized home has the same rent formula.
Do I need my own Section 8 voucher?
For project-based assistance, the subsidy is attached to the designated apartment. Ask the property or administering agency about that program’s application. Bringing a tenant-based voucher is a different arrangement and requires its own confirmation.
Where do I apply, and can there be a waiting list?
Start with the property or the agency identified for its program. Application channels depend on the property and program. Ask whether the relevant list is open, whether separate apartment programs have separate lists, and how to keep your application active.
Can I take the assistance with me if I move?
Project-based assistance stays with the apartment. Some programs offer a way to request other assistance after meeting specific conditions. Ask the administering agency about your options before giving notice; a move does not automatically transfer the subsidy.
