Understanding Section 8 and housing vouchers
The Housing Choice Voucher program, often called Section 8, helps eligible households rent privately owned homes. A local public housing agency determines program eligibility and administers assistance. With a tenant-based voucher, you search for a home, and the agency must approve the apartment and rent before assistance begins.
This directory brings together local listings with published voucher acceptance, including any stated home-specific conditions. Acceptance does not guarantee a vacant apartment or approval. Assistance attached to designated apartments is a separate arrangement, explained in our subsidized housing category. Compare the property’s requirements with your agency’s instructions before committing to a home.

Section 8 and voucher questions
General program guidance reviewed October 15, 2026. Check the applicable property and program requirements before applying.
How do I apply for a housing voucher?
Apply through a public housing agency, rather than through this directory. Eligibility includes household income, household size and other program requirements. Check the applicable public housing agency’s current application and waiting-list instructions.
How much rent would I pay?
A household’s contribution generally starts around 30% of adjusted monthly income. The agency calculates the actual share using program rules, the apartment’s rent and utility allowance. A higher-priced home can increase your share; ask the agency for the approved amount.
Does voucher acceptance mean I can move in immediately?
No. You still need a suitable available home, the landlord’s application decision and the agency’s approval. The process includes checking rent reasonableness and the apartment’s condition. Ask about application fees and deposits before paying.
Is a project-based voucher the same as a voucher I bring?
A tenant-based voucher supports your search for an eligible rental. Project-based assistance is attached to designated apartments. Ask whether you need a separate property or program waiting list, and what happens to assistance if you later move.
Does a listing mean the voucher waiting list is open?
No. Property listings and public housing agency waiting lists are separate. Check the agency’s current notices for application openings, and keep your contact information updated if you join a waiting list.
